Changi Airport Group and Haikou Meilan Airport partner on cargo development

Changi Airport Group (CAG) and Haikou Meilan International Airport, located on the Chinese island of Hainan, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to strengthen their collaboration in areas including air cargo development, airport management, new routes, staff training and technology innovation.

CAG said the new two-year agreement marks a significant step towards driving mutual growth and enhancing connectivity in the region.

In terms of cargo development, the partnership will focus on advancing international air logistics subcontracting, warehousing, cross-border e-commerce and related services.

The cooperation aims to position the Hainan Free Trade Port as a global logistics hub by enhancing digitalisation, improving operational efficiency and streamlining customs clearance processes.

Opened in 1999, Meilan Airport has grown into one of China’s key domestic airports, with an annual capacity to handle 400,00 tonnes of cargo and 35 million passengers. It is positioned as a regional aviation gateway between the Pacific and Indian oceans.

CAG Chief Executive Officer Yam Kum Weng said: “We are delighted to formalise our partnership with Meilan Airport through this MoU. The collaboration reflects our shared vision for driving operational excellence and innovations in aviation.

“By combining our strengths and expertise, we look forward to unlocking new opportunities for growth, advancing technology adoption, and enhancing air connectivity in the region.”
