Speedcargo and Güdel launch automated handling system

Tech start-up Speedcargo has partnered with machine component manufacturer Güdel to create the world’s first fully-automated robotic freight handling solution for airfreight.

The robotic system is expected to change the way ground handlers store and move cargo at airports, say the companies, who say the system is capable of handling cargo of a variety of sizes and shapes.

Combining Güdel’s advanced gantry robots with Speedcargo’s computer vision, optimisation and intelligent robotics software will improve ground handling operations.

The system will improve cargo acceptance by creating express automated lanes with a seamless integrated process for weight, dimension and x-ray, offering continuous throughput at the acceptance gates and ready-for-carriage cargo to be moved to the buffer zone.

It offers an automated buffer for storage and retrieval with accepted cargo being intelligently and efficiently stored and managed for precise and fast retrieval, meaning warehouse space can be used to its full capacity.

The system also automates ULD build up with AI to automatically execute build-up plans using gantry robots while a centralised control system ensures that the cargo is fed to the palletising robot in an optimised sequence.

Matthias Vogelsanger, CTO of Güdel Group, says, “As wages rise and labour shortages worsen, air freight handling will become increasingly automated. Our partnership with Speedcargo allows us to take advantage of the potential of pick-and-place applications when combined with artificial intelligence.”

Automated cargo handling solutions will address key industry challenges, say the company, as the industry tackles labour shortages and space constraints, and it will improve safety with consistent, safe and high quality handling.
