TIACA publishes 4th Sustainability Insights Report

The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) has released the 4th Air Cargo Sustainability Insights Report, which found increased awareness and that large companies are more likely to take action.

The report, which can be read here and was produced by Change Horizon, had responses from almost 300 companies across different parts of the air cargo industry and the world.

Steven Polmans, Chairman of TIACA, says, “The results of the Insights Report are encouraging and while we have made progress on the sustainability front, we still have quite a bit of work to do. The Insights Report allows us to see how far we have come from the initial launch four years ago to where we are today as well as areas that we need to put more focus on.”

There were a number of key findings in the report including 71% of companies have a sustainability, which varies from 92% for large companies, 56% for medium-sized companies while only 42% of small companies say they have a strategy.

By region, Europe leads the way with 74% saying they have a sustainability strategy, followed by 70% in both the Americas and the Middle East & Africa region, and 66% for Asia.

91% of respondents said sustainability has the support of their CEO and 94% said their CEO placed sustainability as a strategic priority, adding that 15% declare that they do not see any concrete action.

97% of respondents said sustainability was equally or more important than last year and 62% reported sustainability expertise on Board or Senior Executive Committee level, rising to 85% for large European companies.

Companies increasingly employ a sustainability team with 56% saying they employ at least one person for the agenda, varying from 76% for large companies, 46% for medium-sized companies and only 28% for small companies.

Money is an issue with only 42% having a sustainability budget, down 3 percentage points on last year, while 46% of companies who have a budget have increased it in the last year.

Other insights include the parties applying pressure with 67% saying the pressure is increasing, up 3 percentage points on last year, rising to 76% for large companies.

Since the first survey was conducted in 2021, the biggest increase in pressure has come from regulators, with 61% saying it was important to regulators compared to 36% in the first survey.

Glyn Hughes, Director General of TIACA says the association will continue supporting the industry through the Sustainability Program’s portfolio and maintain its investments in projects such as BlueSky, the Sustainability Roadmap, the Sustainability Awards and the Insights Report.

He says, “As we move ahead, we look forward to the launch of new projects that will continue to support the industry’s sustainability path including the Invest In Climate Action and the Air Cargo Training Library platforms, both of which are scheduled to launch this week.”
