Qantas Freight orders more A321Fs as online shopping booms

Qantas Freight will add 6 Airbus A321 Freighters to its domestic fleet to cater for strong e-commerce demand.

The A321s will arrive between early 2024 and mid-2026, replacing the long-term fleet of 5 Boeing 737s, which are approaching the end of their economic life.

They will be converted passenger aircraft sourced on the open market, subject to commercial negotiations, and capable of carrying 23 tonnes of cargo, 9 more than the 737s, and be 30% more fuel efficient.

Qantas already operates 3 A321P2Fs and the airline says that replacing the 737s will simplify its fleet, making training and maintenance more efficient.

Alan Joyce, CEO of Qantas Group, says, “Qantas Freight has been one of the standout performers for the Group during the pandemic as Australians rapidly shifted to online shopping. While some of that shift is temporary, demand remains well-above pre-pandemic levels even with the lifting of almost all Covid-related restrictions.”

Qantas Freight is also converting 2 Airbus A330s into freighters, one of which will be used on the domestic network and the other will be used for international services.

The airline also operates one Boeing 767 and wet leases 2 Boeing 747s from Atlas Air.

Its domestic fleet consists of 3 A321Fs, which will increase to 9 with the new arrivals, 3 Boeing 737-300s following the retirement of one last month, and one 737-400.
