DHL plane splits in half after crash landing at Costa Rica airport

A DHL Boeing 757-200 crash landed at Costa Rica airport following a hydraulic failure.

Video footage shows the aircraft making a dramatic emergency landing at Juan Santamaria international airport before sliding off the runway and completely splitting in two.

The aircraft was on its way to Guatemala on 7 April but was forced to turn back to Juan airport when crew noticed a hydraulic failure, according to Costa Rica's civil aviation authority.

The pilot and co-pilot were not harmed and the airport authorities and DHL are now conducting an investigation to find out what caused the failure.

The airport reopened 3.30pm local time around five hours after the crash, affecting thousands of passenger and cargo flights.
