Ethiopian Airlines gains cargo advantage

It is understood that the Kenyan government has approved Ethiopian Airlines operating with passenger aircraft to carry cargo to and from Jomo Kenyatta International in Nairobi.

The move, initiated by the fact that the carrier's fleet is grounded because of COVID-19, will see service to Europe and Asia.

This deal will involve six passenger aircraft operating from Mombasa to Nairobi; Ethiopian Airlines is expected to ship fresh vegetables, fruits, flowers and meat.

The agreement comes just days after Kenya Airways flew its first passenger aircraft as a cargo-only service, carrying medical supplies and other goods from Nairobi to Johannesburg on a B787-8 Dreamliner.

The bigger question, though, is that of the effect that the new proposals will have on Kenya Airways, which has struggled since the virus hit the African continent.
