Final 747 rolls off the production line

The final Boeing 747 has left the factory in Everett, Washington, ending a production run which lasted more than half a century.

The final aircraft, a 747-8 Freighter, has a revenue payload of 133 tonnes and will enter service with Atlas Air in early 2023.

Production of the 747 started in 1967 with the first commercial service in 1970, with more than 1,500 units being built in total.

Measuring 76 metres, the 747-8 is the longest commercial aircraft in service, and at typical cruising speeds, it covers the length of 3 football pitches per second.

Kim Smith, Boeing Vice President and General Manager, 747 and 767 Programs, says, “For more than half a century, tens of thousands of dedicated Boeing employees have designed and built this magnificent airplane that has truly changed the world. We are proud that this plane will continue to fly across the globe for years to come.”
