Scramble to buy cargo aircraft

Qatar Airways Cargo and Air Belgium have been buying freighters.

Qatar Airways Cargo has pulled all four remaining Airbus A330-200 freighters from its fleet, after receiving three brand new Boeing 777 freighters. Two more new B777 freighters are planned to join the fleet in March and April of this year.

Qatar Airways Cargo had planned a phased removal of the five freighters but the pandemic and the delay in the delivery of the B777 freighters necessitated rethinking the situation.

Separately, Air Belgium recently announced a desire to diversify into cargo. At the close of January the carrier confirmed that it would soon be introducing four cargo aircraft, with an ambition to reach six units by the end of 2021.

The first two aircraft should be operational by March 2021 and they will be based at Liège.
