Air cargo in Abu Dhabi undergoes digital transformation

AD Ports Group’s digital arm has developed Digital Airfreight Solutions to improve efficiency of air cargo in Abu Dhabi.

The service was developed by Maqta Gateway as part of the Advanced Trade and Logistics Platform (ATLP) in cooperation with partners including Abu Dhabi Airports, Etihad Airport Services and Etihad Cargo to streamline the movement of air cargo shipments to and from all five airports in Abu Dhabi.

Efficiencies include reducing waiting times by 80%, improving delivery time via customs integration, enhancing track and trace visibility, digital payment channels and enhancing warehouse utilisation through an automated appointment system.

Dr Noura Al Dhaheri, Head of Digital Cluster at AD Ports Group and CEO of Maqta Gateway says: “ATLP is taking the next steps towards enhancing transparency across the entire value chain and enabling stakeholders and customers to realise new efficiencies associated with the movement of air cargo to and from Abu Dhabi.”

The new service cuts the amount of paperwork required for air cargo shipments by 90% and reduces unnecessary trips to the airport for airfreight agents by 80% by providing digital access to documents and online payments and document handling to the ground handler.

Digitalising documents improves staff efficiency by 50% and cuts processing times from one hour to six minutes.

Delivery times for imports and exports are reduced by 50% due to documents being submitted online, letting ground handlers perform pre-checks and process shipments without waiting for the customer to arrive at the counter.

Martin Drew, Senior Vice President Sales and Cargo at Etihad Aviation Group says: “This is a major stride forward in the industry’s bid to digitally transform the sector to produce wide-ranging benefits for operators and all stakeholders and builds an enhanced client offering and the momentum behind Abu Dhabi’s positioning as a global trade, cargo and logistics hub.”

ATLP was developed and operated by Maqta Gateway under the supervision of the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development to enhance trade and logistics, and link the sea, land, air, industrial and free zones with relevant authorities.
