Air Inuit takes delivery of Dash 8-300

Air Inuit has taken delivery of the world’s first large freight door De Havilland Dash 8-300.

The Dash 8-300 has a maximum take-off weight of 19.5 tonnes and a range of 968 miles, and the door has an opening of 108 x 68 inches.

It received its Supplemental Type Certificate from Transport Canada on 3 February after 36 months of planning, design, retrofitting and safety testing.

Air Inuit says that the use of palettes for moving food and other goods will reduce loading and unloading times and reduce the risk of damage to fragile cargo.

The Dash 8-300 will serve remote communities and can take off and land on short gravel runways.

Christian Busch, President and CEO of Air Inuit says: “The introduction of this innovative design to Air Inuit's fleet is about more than the convenience and reliability the people of Nunavik have come to expect. It is about recognising the specific challenges of the communities we serve, and finding an innovative new way to support the development of those communities. Hats off to our team and partners for achieving this.”
