Airfreight profits double at Kuehne + Nagel

Airfreight profits at Kuehne + Nagel more than doubled in 2021 helped by strong demand for specialist products including pharma and e-commerce.

Full-year EBIT was 1.16 billion Swiss Francs ($1.26bn), up 131% on 2020, and it increased 237% in the fourth quarter to CHF522m.

Net turnover for the year was up 108% to CHF10.8bn and 184% in the fourth quarter to CHF4.3bn.

Kuehne + Nagel handled 2.2 million tonnes of cargo in 2021, and the consolidation of Apex Logistics was a major contributor to Kuehne + Nagel’s strong results.

In 2021, Kuehne + Nagel transported 1.2 billion Covid-19 vaccines to 90 countries around the world.

Dr Detlef Trefzger, CEO of Kuehne + Nagel International says: “In 2021, Kuehne + Nagel proved itself an important and reliable logistics partner in a challenging market environment. Our 78,000 colleagues worked relentlessly to support customers with a winning service offering. Once again, we focused on customers, systems and employees, we accelerated strategic initiatives and we far surpassed our ambitious financial targets.”

The outlook is favourable but the conflict in Ukraine is a cause for concern, Trefzger says: “Russia’s acts of war highlight the unpredictable nature of geopolitics – the effects of which on economic development cannot yet be assessed.”
