Alexion switches to SAF for DHL Express deliveries

DHL Express has signed a partnership with Alexion AstraZeneca Rare Disease to transport highly specialised medicines manufactured in Ireland using sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

Alexion is the first company in Ireland to completely switch from traditional aviation fuel to SAF, which will reduce greenhouse gas emissions by over 80%.

The SAF will be provided through the DHL GoGreen Plus service, which uses SAF as a substitute for traditional fuel and does not require modifications to engines.

AstraZeneca’s sustainability strategy includes decarbonising the supply chain.

From 2030, AstraZeneca aims to halve its absolute scope 3 emissions from the 2019 base value on the way to net zero by 2045.

Sylvia Kiely, Vice President Global Supply Chain and Product Strategy Lead at Alexion AstraZeneca Rare Disease, says, “Moving our air freight to Sustainable Aviation Fuel is an important milestone in reaching our Scope 3 targets, with the ambition of being science-based net zero by 2045. Through our partnership with DHL Express we've signed up immediately to a 100% change in fuel, rather than scaling up over time, which demonstrates how seriously we take environmental stewardship.”

Brian Murray, Commercial & Same Day Director at DHL Express Ireland, says, “Our GoGreen Plus service using emission-reduced sustainable aviation fuel demonstrates the tangible impact of collaborative efforts to decarbonise the logistics industry and support our customers in achieving their sustainability goals. This initiative aligns perfectly with DHL's sustainability strategy and our goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.”
