Amazon grows cargo footprint

The e-commerce specialist Amazon has purchased a minority stake in a US air cargo operator, Air Transport Services Group.

Amazon has acquired almost 13.5m shares in the group, which equates to around a 20% holding.

There is some history to this deal, which dates back to 2016, at which point Amazon received warrants to purchase the cargo operator's shares. With that agreement, the Air Transport Services Group began to operate an air cargo network with 20 B767 aircraft to serve Amazon customers in the US. The term stated was for five years.

In addition, Amazon has also acquired warrants to purchase shares in Atlas Air Worldwide Holdings and Sun Country Airlines Holdings: both of these also operate Amazon Air freighter aircraft.
