The e-commerce giant launched drone delivery services in the US in 2022 and has delivered thousands of parcels in 60 minutes or less using drones it designed and built.
In a statement, Amazon says there is still a lot of work to be done and that it will lodge a planning application with the local authority to build flight operation facilities and it needs to apply for authorisation from the Civil Aviation Authority to fly drones in the airspace.
Once this is done, Amazon will start hiring team members to operate the service.
Amazon says, “We’ll continue to work closely with the CAA as they develop the regulatory framework to make commercial drone delivery a reality in the UK.”
It adds that the team will engage with the local community in Darlington to answer questions and collect feedback.
Once the service is live, customers within the service area will be able to place orders from the Amazon app or website, Amazon says.
