American Airlines doubles plastic waste reduction

Airlines Sustainability
American Airlines Cargo replaced more than 274,000lbs of plastic in 2024 with biodegradable products supplied by BioNatur Plastics.

The partnership started in 2022 and helped American Airlines Cargo to cut reduce plastic waste by the equivalent of 6.4 million plastic water bottles.

In 2024, using the BioNatur products meant that plastic waste was reduced by the equivalent of 12.6 million plastic water bottles.

BioNatur Plastics provides biodegradable and 100% recyclable plastic products with the functionality of traditional plastic with the advantages of not breaking down into microplastics.

The products biodegrade in landfill within eight to twelve years.

American Airlines is using BioNatur’s products at most US hubs, smaller stations and across Latin America, and it plans to replace traditional plastic with biodegradable products at all stations.

BioNatur Plastics is distributed by M&G Packaging and uses include lower deck pallet covers, heavy duty poly sheeting, stretch wrap, bottom sheeting and plastic covers.

Greg Schwendinger, President of American Airlines Cargo, says, “To see the progress over just three years shows how implementing sustainable practices can truly make a difference. We look forward to continuing to work toward a green future.”

Chris Paladino, President of BioNatur Plastics, adds, “American continues to be a leader in sustainability and we are proud to have supported the cargo team as they more than doubled their impact in 2024.”
