Australia Post opens Melbourne Airport parcel hub

Australia Post has made international inbound parcel processing more efficient and automated with the opening of its International Commercial Facility at Melbourne Airport.

The 2,500 square metre facility on Sky Road has advanced automation technology capable of sorting up to 6,000 parcels per hour.

It will support and service Australia Post’s international merchant customer base, replacing the manual sorting process to boost processing capacity by 50%.

The facility is the first of its kind for Australia Post in Victoria which has been designed specifically to expedite the clearance process for international parcels coming into Australia.

It was designed with sustainability in mind, featuring optimised linehaul and transport routing to reduce carbon emissions, as well as enhanced waste management systems to improve recycling efficiency for materials like cardboard and plastic.

Gary Starr, Executive General Manager Parcel, Post and eCommerce at Australia Post, says, “This upgrade is a key investment in our future operations and how we serve our international customers. With brand new automated sorting machines processing up to 6,000 parcels per hour, we’re able to handle more parcels, reduce touch points and manual handling, improve safety, increase customer package visibility and get packages to customers faster.”

The Australian Border Force and the Department of Agriculture Fisheries & Forestry have dedicated areas for parcel inspections at the facility.
