BIFA to launch Customs declaration training course

The British International Freight Association (BIFA) will launch an online training course to help members to use the UK’s new Customs Declaration Service (CDS).

HM Revenue and Customs’ CDS will replace CHIEF in a phased transition ending in April 2023, with BIFA offering hands on tuition, practical exercise and a technical resource, finishing with an assessment.

BIFA’s CDS – eLearning course is designed for those completing Customs declarations and will cover the main differences between CHIEF and CDS.

The course, which will be available from September, has been developed in conjunction with Agency Sector Management, which provides software to the UK Customs clearance and freight forwarding industries and represents the interests of the freight forwarding community.

It consists of eight modules offering an introduction to CDS, required data elements, and the UK Trade Tariff and customs procedure codes. Other modules cover commercial relationships, methods of payment and authorisations as well as documents, certifications and authorisations indicators.

Simulation exercises and an assessment mean users can check their knowledge and understand about future import and export declaration processes.

Robert Keen, director general of BIFA says: “Whilst dual-running of both systems will continue, we know enough about the new CDS system to be confident in offering a training course to BIFA members and others that will provide cost effective and invaluable advice and information.”
