The deal covers 7.2 million litres of SAF purchased annually, which DHL Express will use on its regular services from April this year.
Saffaire Sky Energy, a subsidiary of Cosmo Energy Holdings will produce SAF at its mass production facility, scheduled to begin operations this year.
Through the deal, DHL has secured a stable supply of SAF so it can decarbonise air cargo transport in Japan.
The SAF will be delivered to Central Japan International Airport in Nagoya, making it the first airport in DHL Express’ Asian network to take SAF.
Tony Khan, President and Representative Director of DHL Express Japan, says, “As part of our responsibility to customers in Japan, we are committed to promoting emission-reduced shipping solutions and to contributing to the reduction of the transport sector's environmental impact.”
Koji Moriyama, President, Representative Director and CEO of Cosmo Oil Marketing, adds, “We are delighted to contribute to the decarbonisation efforts of DHL Express and its customers through SAF, one of our key decarbonisation products. SAF plays an essential role in the decarbonisation of the aviation industry, and we are excited to be part of this important initiative.”
The addition of Cosmo Oil Marketing to DHL Express’ SAF procurement network means that the SAF environmental attributes will be transferred via the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification Credit Transfer System for Sustainable Aviation Fuel.
This will provide credible and transparent environmental claims along the value chain from Cosmo Energy Group to DHL and on to DHL’s customers using the GoGreen Plus emissions reduction transport service.
DHL Express accepts SAF at Amsterdam Airport Schiphol, Stockholm Arlanda Airport, Brussels Airport, Leipzig Airport, East Midlands Airport and London Stansted Airport in Europe.
In the USA, DHL Express accepts SAF at Los Angeles, Miami and San Francisco airports.
