DHL Global Forwarding opens Indianapolis pharma hub

DHL Global Forwarding has opened a logistics hub at Indianapolis International Airport dedicated to life sciences and healthcare products.

The 30,000 square-foot end-of-runway facility has direct access to the airport ramp, combining DHL’s ground handling operations with a dedicated Boeing 777 Freighter connection to Liege, Belgium to provide a first-of-its-kind temperature-controlled cargo service in the US.

The end-to-end process has been designed to ship pharmaceuticals and other life science products without the need for specialised temperature-controlled ULDs, maintaining quality control and generating savings in transportation costs and time in transit.

The $1.5 million facility will offer specialised forwarding and warehousing services, customs brokerage and cold-chain packaging management.

Jose Maria de Orduna, Regional Vice President, US East Region of DHL Global Forwarding, says, “Indiana is an important pharmaceutical hub in the United States and our focus is to ensure seamless and safe transportation of the important products being developed here to facilitate the growth of our customers’ operations in the region.

“This investment, combined with the know-how of our specialised life sciences and healthcare team in the US, will allow us to provide a unique end-to-end cold chain air cargo service that delivers both cost and transit time benefits for our customers.”
