DHL offers sustainable fuel to private customers

DHL is offering private customers sending packages and parcels from Germany the option to use sustainable aviation fuel.

Selecting the GoGreen Plus International option in the DHL Online Franking portal, emissions will be cut by using SAF on freighter aircraft in the DHL Group logistics network.

The service is available from Germany to Australia, Israel and the US with more countries to follow depending on customer acceptance and demand.

Benjamin Rasch, Chief Marketing Officer of DHL Post & Parcel Germany, says, “Making our logistics network and our product portfolio more environmentally friendly remains our overarching goal in view of advancing climate change. With GoGreen Plus, we are the first logistics services provider to offer private customers shipping international packages and parcels the chance to play a more active role in avoiding greenhouse gas emissions.”

The basic GoGreen service offsets emissions through investments in climate protection projects.

With GoGreen Plus, the additional amount the customer pays is used to avoid greenhouse gas emissions from the outset through insetting measures.

The greenhouse gas emissions generated in shipping a parcel depends on its weight and the distance flown with DHL purchasing and using the quantity of SAF needed to avoid emissions.

DHL says SAF costs 3 to 4 times as much as conventional aviation fuel, which is reflected in the price of avoiding emissions.

On 1 July, GoGreen Plus was automatically included free of charge for all domestic registered and priority mail sent with Deutsche Post, cutting emissions at source for mail items through insetting measures across the DHL Group logistics network.
