FAA awards $31m of grants to upgrade cargo infrastructure

The Department of Transportation’s Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has awarded $31m of grants to upgrade cargo infrastructure at airports.

The money is coming from the Airport Improvement Program, which pays for upgrades including constructing new and improved facilities, maintaining airfields, and purchasing new equipment.

Rhode Island T.F. Green International Airport in Warwick, Rhode Island received the smallest grant of $197,310 to design a new 60,000 square yard cargo apron.

The largest grant has been awarded to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport in Alaska, which will receive just over $8.1m reconstruct the taxiline and rehabilitate the cargo apron.

The other airports receiving funds are Stockton Metropolitan Airport in Stockton, California getting $417,036 to fund the design phase to rehabilitate 800 feet of cargo taxiline.

Eugene F. Kranz Toledo Express Airport in Toledo, Ohio will get just over $1m to rehabilitate 27,670 square yards of cargo apron pavement and to design improvements to 16,450 square feet of the taxiway safety area erosion control system.

$1.9m will be given to Seattle-Tacoma International Airport in Seattle, Washington to reconstruct 4,200 square yards of existing cargo apron pavement.

Bishop International Airport in Flint, Michigan will get $2.3m to rehabilitate 37,400 square yards of cargo apron pavement and perform crack repair and joint sealing to 26,800 square yards of deicing apron surface.

Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport in Greer, South Carolina will receive $4.5m to rehabilitate taxiways and cargo apron pavement.

Huntsville International Airport Carl T. Jones Field in Huntsville, Alabama will get $5.6m to rehabilitate 5,600 square yards of cargo apron and expand its access road.

Chicago Rockford International Airport in Rockford, Illinois will get $6.8m to construct a 4,267 foot taxiway and connectors to increase access to the south cargo apron.

Pete Buttigieg, US Transportation Secretary, says, “Today’s announcement will make improvements at airports across our country so they can handle cargo more efficiently and help strengthen America’s supply chains.”
