FedEx Express doubles capacity at Incheon airport

FedEx Express has doubled its capacity at Incheon International Airport with the opening of the FedEx Incheon Gateway.

The 23,395 square metre facility is equipped with 78 conveyor belts and an advanced automated sortation system, which can sort up to 12,000 packages per hour.

It also has a 15,207 square metre warehouse, which can store up to 40,000 packages.

FedEx operates 31 weekly flights at Incheon, and the new facility will support importers and exporters ranging from SMEs to large shippers.

Kawal Preet, President of the Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa region at FedEx Express, says, “With South Korea tracking as the fourth biggest exporter in Asia last year and the world’s fifth-largest e-commerce market, the new Incheon Gateway will further boost our already extensive network to create possibilities for customers across the region. As trade lanes continue to diversify, businesses particularly across the North Pacific region will benefit from this newly opened facility as they continue to harness the full potential of global trade opportunities.”

To support cold-chain shipments, the new gateway’s cold storage area is 5 times larger, and it contains 3 separate chambers compliant with GDP guidelines for temperature-controlled storage including freezer, cool and ambient temperatures.

The facility has been designed with sustainability in mind, generating renewable energy through 2,400 solar panels on its rooftop, supplying 19% of its energy needs.

A green roof reduces heat flux and energy consumption for cooling or heating.

100% LED lighting saves more than 22,000kW per year and a skylight installation of more than 1,000 square metres increases natural light.
