The first flight arrived in the evening of Monday 3 June, providing 196,000lb of cargo capacity a week and improving access to key markets.
The express transportation company has signed a five-year agreement for an airfreight handling facility at Teesside Airport and has relocated operations from Newcastle International Airport.
FedEx is operating out of Hangar 3 and it has recommitted to its road operation based in Hangar 1 by signing a new five-year lease.
Alun Cornish, Managing Director of Ramp and Gateway Operations for Northern Europe at FedEx says Teesside was chosen for its access to Yorkshire and the north east of England, which will provide import and export connections for companies in the region.
He says, “Our road operation being based out of the airport at Hangar 1 means we’ll also be able to get packages from flights into the road even more quickly, making the decision to set-up at Teesside even more beneficial for our customers.”
Phil Forster, Managing Director of Teesside International Airport, says, “This is a significant step into the cargo market and we look forward to growing our operations further in the future thanks to the investments taking place across the airport estate.”
