LATAM Cargo uses recycled plastic pallets in Chile

LATAM Cargo Group is replacing wooden and conventional plastic pallets with recycled plastic pallets for operations in Chile.

The high-density recycled plastic pallets have replaced plastic and wooden pallets to transport bulk cargo from the warehouse to the aircraft for domestic cargo operations in Chile.

The recycled pallets have a lifespan of approximately a decade, much longer than conventional plastic.

Cristina Onate, VP Sustainability and Product at LATAM Cargo Group, says, “Sustainability is a priority for LATAM Cargo Group and the transition to recycled materials, such as plastic pallets, reflects our commitment to the circular economy and the goal of being a zero waste to landfill group by 2027.”

The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pallets are manufactured by Rehrig Pacific Company in a 50/50 mix of recycled and virgin plastic.

They are stronger and their distinctive red colour makes them easier to identify and returns as LATAM is the only operator in Chile to use the colour.

The recycled plastic pallets are lighter, more resistant, do not require constant maintenance and are more hygienic as they do not accumulate fungi or bacteria.

Their non-slip structure minimises the risk of cargo displacement even in extreme conditions.

LATAM is looking at implementing recycled plastic pallets in other cargo operations across South America.
