NAM and ACS fly 30 White Rhinos to new home in Rwanda

Network Airline Management and Air Charter Service South Africa has carried out “the biggest single White Rhino translocation ever undertaken”.

Using one of NAM’s wet-leased Air Atlanta Icelandic Boeing 747Fs, 30 White Rhinos flew from Durban, South Africa to Kigali, Rwanda on their way to their new home in Akagera National Park.

The 30 rhinos, consisting of 11 males and 19 females, weighed over 60 tonnes and were joined on the four-hour flight by handlers to monitor them throughout the journey and provide care, water and catering.

Sam Lindsey, Senior Commercial Manager at NAM says: “There are a lot of operational difficulties when arranging live animal charter flights, even more so during the Covid-19 pandemic and with a threatened species. However, our experienced operations and commercial teams were quick to resolve any issues to ensure the Rhinos got to their final destination safely. We thank Francois Vermeulen at ACS South Africa for his trust in Network on this project.”
