Network Airline Services gives fish a five-star service

Network Airline Services has assisted flying fish to Malta, where they are settling into their new home in a five-star hotel.

The shipment of 100 mixed-sex Tilapia fish travelled from London’s Heathrow Airport on an Air Malta Airbus A320 and are now at home in the Xara Palace Relais and Chateaux in Mdina.

Michael Bourne of Brave Ecologic says the fish will support a sustainable food system based on aquaponics and insect lifecycle.

For the project, organic food waste is fed to insect larvae which, combined with other nutrients, are converted into fish food.

He says this supports an aquaponic system that produces sustainable fish, flowers, herbs, salads and vegetables to be served in kitchens including the De Mondion Michelin Star restaurant in Mdina.

Bourne says: “The shipment allows us to establish a breeding colony to keep a sustainable cycle of local food production and organic waste recycling without releasing CO2 or methane but instead absorbing CO2 from the atmosphere and keeping it in the food chain.”
