Qatar Airways retires final Queen of the Skies

Qatar Airways Cargo has retired its last Boeing 747 Freighter as it upgraded its fleet with more fuel-efficient aircraft.

The B747F, registration A7-BGB flew from Barcelona to Doha on flight number QR8807, touching down at 15.00h local time on Friday 1 March.

It joined the fleet on 26 September 2017 and was one of two B747Fs in service with Qatar Airways Cargo.

The two B747Fs operated over 9,000 flights, clocking up over 66,000 block hours and transporting almost 800,000 tonnes of cargo.

The top 747 destination was Seoul’s Incheon International Airport in South Korea with 1,165 flights.

The iconic aircraft played a vital role in pandemic relief by carrying PPE and other medical equipment around the world when many other aircraft were grounded.

Mark Drusch, Chief Officer Cargo at Qatar Airways Cargo says the 747s were introduced in response to a sharp rise in demand for capacity.

The Next Generation freighter strategy wants to make the fleet more efficient through harmonisation and simplification, and the sustainability part requires improvements in fuel efficiency.

He says, “For these important factors, Qatar Airways Cargo is the launch customer for Boeing’s next generation 777-8F freighter, the most fuel efficient, lowest carbon footprint freighter in the cargo industry. We are committed to the most modern and cleanest freighter fleet in the industry.”

Qatar Airways Cargo has placed a firm order for 34 Boeing 777-8Fs with the option for 16 more to complement its fleet of 27 Boeing 777Fs, with the 28th joining this month.

The B777-8F has advanced technology systems, airframes and engines, which will reduce fuel use and CO2 emissions by 30% compared to the B747-8F.
