Ground handlers using Secure Import will advise a forwarder that a shipment is ready for collection who will use the system to direct a transporter to pick up the shipment.
The Secure Import system checks that these are the correct parties and informs the ground handler who will be collecting the shipment and at what time.
Last year, all cargo handling agents at Schiphol tightened rules to access their forecourts with driver visits to dnata, KLM Cargo, Menzies Aviation, Swissport and Worldwide Flight Services’ forecourts being notified in advance via e-Registration.
The Secure Import system, which will go live at the beginning of 2024, further tightens the registration process.
A secure e-Visit key has been built into the system for the various process steps required for the transfer of a shipment with the driver only receiving the cargo once the key has been approved.
Sensitive shipment information will only be shared on a need to know basis to prevent data manipulation by third parties.
Secure Import is being developed in the Smart Cargo Mainport Program in consultation with future users.
The parties involved signed a Best Effort declaration today (Wednesday 12 July) voicing their support for the development of the Secure Import system.

Maarten van As, Managing Director of Air Cargo Netherlands, adds, “In response to a number of incidents of theft at Schiphol, together with our partner SmartLOXS and Security Managers at Schiphol, we have developed a ten-step plan to counter theft in the air cargo chain. The ACN pass plays an important role in this. The development and implementation of Secure Import is the final step in the plan and will ensure that Schiphol Airport is a forerunner in the fight against cargo theft.”
