United Eco-Skies Alliance wins TIACA Sustainability Award

United Airlines has won the Corporate category of TIACA’s Sustainability Award for its Eco-Skies Alliance programme.

The initiatives lets companies come together and contribute to the purchase of sustainable aviation fuel, and over 20 major corporations have joined so far.

It was picked by a jury of six industry leaders and sustainability champions who evaluated the submissions on a number of criteria, including impact on society and industry, ease of implementation, innovation and wow factor.

The International Air Cargo Association (TIACA) are running the awards in partnership with CHAMP Cargosystems, and three finalists have been chosen for the Start-Up/Small business category.

The three finalists are Mission GO, which uses drones to transport organs; WAVES, which makes sustainability visible through the use of cloud technology; and Xfret, which has developed a container that can be placed on empty seats in commercial aircraft cabins.

The winner will receive a $10,000 cash prize and the runners up will receive $2,500 each when the results are announced at the TIACA Executive Summit in San Francisco, which will be held from 22-24 March.

Congratulating United Airlines and thanking the jury, Steven Polmans, Chairman of TIACA says: “It gives me great pleasure to congratulate United Cargo for being selected as the overall corporate winner and to the three start-up / small business finalists. I look forward to their participation at the upcoming Executive Summit in San Francisco.”
