WFS expands at Chicago O'Hare with new cargo terminal

Worldwide Flight Services (WFS) has increased cargo capacity at Chicago O’Hare International Airport by more than 10% with the opening of a new cargo terminal.

It has signed a 15-year lease on the facility located in the airport’s Northeast Cargo Area, which started operations last month.

The new facility provides an additional 122,000 square feet of warehouse space, 10,000 square feet of office space and 200,000 square feet of ramp space.

WFS has been operating at Chicago O’Hare for almost 40 years and opening the fourth facility extends its footprint at the airport to 595,000 square feet.

In the past 12 months, WFS has gained or renewed contracts with Flexport, Atlas Air, Eva Air, Kalitta Air, KLM, Air France, Martinair, WestJet, UPS, USPS and China Airlines, with the new facility providing a platform for future growth.

Focusing on sustainability, the new facility is equipped with electric forklift vehicles as well as solar panels and EV chargers.

Other features of the new facility include a 3-tier AKE storage racking system to optimise handling capacity and an automated bypass system.

A 3,000 square foot, 2-storey cooler with 3 levels of vertical storage and the capacity of over 100 skid positions and 6 ULD pallets will support premium temperature-controlled products.

Frank Clemente, SVP Cargo, North Americas at WFS, says, “With on-site ramp handling, brand new equipment and sustainability features, it significantly enhances our presence at the airport and provides the growth capacity we need as a leading provider of safe, secure and high quality handling services at one of the premier air cargo gateways in the United States.”
