FedEx and Elroy Air to test Chaparral drone

FedEx Express has signed a deal with Elroy Air to test the Chaparral drone within its middle-mile logistics operations.

The plan is to move shipments between sortation centres and the two companies are working on necessary certificates with the plan of operating the first flights in 2023.

Elroy Air unveiled the Chaparral in January this year, which can carry 300-500 pounds of cargo and has a range of up to 300 miles.

Joe Stephens, Vice President of Global Planning, Engineering and Technology at FedEx Express says: “FedEx was built on innovation and we are always looking toward new technologies to help enhance the logistics industry through improved safety, efficiency and customer service. We look forward to continued testing and learning throughout our collaboration with Elroy Air.”

Kofi Asante, Vice President of Business Development and Strategy adds: “When you’re not limited by challenging infrastructure, traffic, or airports, logistics can reach more people, faster than ever before. We look forward to working together to create a new future for how we get goods to people around the world.”
