Miami breaks cargo records for second year running

Miami International Airport has broken cargo records for a second year running by handling 2.7 million tons in 2021.

Beating the previous record-breaking year of 2020 by 17%, Miami handled 2.2 million tons of international freight, up 17%, and 500,000 tons of domestic freight, up 15%.

Daniella Levine Cava, Miami-Dade County Mayor says: “I am thrilled to see MIA have another record-breaking year in freight shipments and expand on its role as the cargo gateway of the Americas, further increasing the transportation of essential goods and life-saving supplies across the world. This is yet another example of how Miami-Dade County is ready to increase its capacity exponentially and help alleviate the supply chain crisis nationwide.”

Two major facility expansions were completed in 2021, with DHL Express completing a $78m renovation and expansion of its Miami hub, doubling its sorting capacity and warehouse space to 206,000 square feet.

In December, FedEx Express completed a $72.2m expansion, doubling its facility size to more than 282,000 square feet.

Enhancements include a new customs clearance area and a 70,000 square-foot cold chain facility.
